Riverfront Recapture Head Race (Nov 6, 2011) V/Jv
This regatta is held in early to mid october. It was initiated in 1999, and run by Riverfront Recapture Inc. The date falls just before or after Head of the Connecticut, depending on the calendar and the schedule of other Fall races. Boat launch and Common Table Setup take place at Charter Oak Landing
2011 Regatta was held on Sunday November 6th. This was due to high water during the regular first weekend in October. Simsbury had planned to race, however an end of October noreaster changed those plans. Simsbury lost power for 100% of the town on October 29 and as of November 6th 42% was still out of power. This Snowstorm came as leaves were still on trees and many branches came down.

The Head of the Connecticut V/Jv
Traditionally held on Sunday of Columbus day weekend, for many years this has been the 2nd largest regatta in the country, with hundreds of boats and thousands of participants entered in many divisions. Colleges, individuals, rowing clubs, and high schools compete. It is held at Harbor Park in Middletown.
2011: Simsbury entered 4 boys eights and 3 girls eights. Due to water conditions only ther girls boats were able to race. G1 was 6th of 15 crews. G2 was 3rd of 14 crews and the G3 was 8th in the same event. Good team work by the whole team today.

The Head of the Charles - 1st boats only
The largest regatta in the country, it attracts schools from the West coast, Canada and overseas. Held on the Charles river dividing Cambridge and Boston, it can bring out large crowds if the weather is good. The river is fairly narrow, with many curves, so this race is a real test of the coxswain's skills and can provide some nerve-wracking moments as boats try to pass each other. The first varsity Boys' and Girls' boats race when granted entry. The boats row on Sunday of the two day regatta. The team arrives in Boston on Saturday to tour the course and venue.
For driving, take 84 East to the Mass Pike (U.S. Route 90) east toward Boston. Take the Allston/Cambridge exit (a left exit) and ask the officers where you can park.
Parking is difficult, and you will probably do a great deal of walking at this race. There is a good view of the course from almost anywhere along either side of its three-mile length. Our crews launch from the F.A.L.S. (Finish Area Launch Site). Simsbury boys and girls eights are launching out of Northeastern University's Henderson Boathouse. Athletes and Coaches ONLY can go into the boathouse. Many parents cheer from a bench on the downstream side of the boathouse.
2011 Simsbury only gained entry for the 1st Girls boat this fall. Racing took place just before 2pm on Sunday of Charles weekend. "Wild Card" coxed by senior tri-captain Jen Nichols had clean water down the course. The boat with 6 senior rowers and 2 juniors finished in 33rd position out of 75 crews. This earned "Wild Card" a return trip in 2012. 867-5-309 steered a great line to put the crew in position for a finish in the top half.

Halloween Regatta - whole team
Usually held on the last weekend of October in Farmington. This is a whole team tri-meet with Farmington, Avon, and Simsbury. This is a 2200m stake race. Crews have to navigate a large U-turn in the middle of the race. Quite a challenge for boats that are designed to go straight.
2011- Scheduled to occur on Saturday October 29, the regatta was cancelled because of the impending Noreaster. The storm devastated the town with 100% powerloss. The Simsbury boathouse fared well as there were only branches on the grounds of the boathouse.

Tabor Cup (Charles A. Pincombe Cup) V/Jv
This race began as a traditional duel race between Simsbury and Tabor Academy. A pitcher was donated by Paul Carabillo in the late 1980's. The "Cup" is named for Charles A. Pincombe. Charlie was a team supporter who lived on the river. He sculled and had helped remove fallen trees from the river. Up until a few seasons ago his house was raked as part of the fall crew fundraiser. The regatta is now held on Lake Quinsigamond. The cup remains between Simsbury and Tabor Academy however, the invited crews include: Simsbury, Tabor Academy, Shrewsbury, East Lyme, Boston Latin (G), Stonington, and St. John's (B).

Kent Scrimmage V/Jv
The 1-3 boys and girls boats travel to Kent School on the Wednesday of April vacation week. Each crew rows practice with a Kent crew at an equal boat level. We row several 1 start,2 base,1 finish pieces. Traditionally we are off the water around 4:00. Athletes should check with the coaches to see what rowers and coxswains are attending the scrimmage.
2011 High water and tough rowing conditions did not allow the scrimmage to happen this year. Simsbury stayed home and ran 10-3 double session with lunch in the middle.

April Vacation
Crew practices and races over the April break. Attendance at April Vacation practice is expected for sophomores, juniors, and seniors (varsity and junior varsity athletes). Vacation falls in the middle of racing season. We have races on both Saturdays of vacation. Practice schedules are set by individual coaches for their team. However, the varsity and jv generally practice twice on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. We also take the 1-3 boys and girls to Kent to scrimmage on Wednesday. Usually we give varsity and JV Thursday off. Upper-classman athletes are asked to make college visitation plans for Thursday. Varsity and jv athletes missing days over vacation may lose opportunities to race during the break and the remaining part of the racing season. Novice athletes will also practice and may race during vacation week.

Regatta @ NMH w/ Concord -B/G 1-3 NB 1, NG 1
2011 This first trip to NMH was on a beautiful Saturday late afternoon. Simsbury won the B2, G2, B3, and B4 races. A fine afternoon was followed by a family style cookout on the hill above the NMH boathouse.
Directions and info will be posted.
Information for parking, boat rigging, and tents:
Because we have several different teams traveling to NMH for this regatta, we are asking parents, coaches, and bus drivers to abide by the following guidelines for parking and set up.
1. Shell trailers will park at the second landing above the boathouse, as indicated on the attached crew parking map (T). Teams may unload their shells and bring them down to the first landing above the boathouse for rigging and launching. Please
share space with each other, as the available area will be tight.
2. Team buses may unload athletes and coaches at the second landing, but should plan to park up at the hockey rink (B).
3. Parking for parents will be tricky because of other sporting events being held on the fields above the boathouse. I have indicated some areas for parent parking on the attached map (P), but I suspect that we will need to find other areas for parents
up on campus. Parents may drive down to the second landing to drop off tents and food, but will not be able to park there.
4. Team tents will be set up along the crest of the first landing above the boathouse. They should not be set up down at the river near the launching areas.

Kent Invitational (Kent) V/Jv, 1st novice
This race has occured since Kent girls began rowing during the spring season in the mid 1980's. Original teams included Salisbury School, Kent School and Simsbury. Now held on Lake Waramaug two Saturdays before the New England's it is an important race for seeding purposes. The 7 racing N.E.I.R.A. member schools include: Simsbury, Kent School, Salisbury School (B), Brunswick School (B), Sacred Heart (G), Farmington (2009),and East Lyme. 2011 has seen Greenwich Academy leave the regatta because they will be racing in the four. As a result, this year defending national champion Connecticut Boat Club (G) will join the girls crews in all 4 events.
2011- Fine racing by all Simsbury crews. Connecticut Boat Club swept the girls and Kent the boys races. Good racing by our crews across the board.

Connecticut Public Schools Rowing Association (CPSRA) V/Jv; 1st novice
This regatta was organized in 1999 by the coaches at Simsbury High School along with several other public school coaches around the state. CPSRA includes crews from almost all the public school rowing programs in the State of Connecticut. The regatta was initiated to provide broad competition for all levels of rowers and all sizes of programs. Another goal has been to develop information and cooperation among public school programs in the state. In the short time since its inception, both the regatta and the number of schools with crew programs have increased significantly.
CPSRA competition includes both eights and fours, and provides races for novice as well as varsity and junior varsity crews. The coaches seek additional volunteer support from parents for this event. This race is held at Lake Waramaug on the Sunday before the 4th Saturday in May.

N.E.I.R.A. (New England's) Seeded 1-3 Crews
NEIRA is a 64 year old regatta that is held annually the 4th Saturday in May. This regatta is held at Lake Quinsigamond. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd boat boys and girls must qualify for this regatta through seeding of the results throughout the spring season. The top 12 crews qualify for 2nd and 3rd boats. The top 18 qualify for the 1st boat crews. Heats are held in the morning with the crews qualifying for the finals rowing in the afternoon. Simsbury has won several New England championships including the 1st girls event in 1980 and 1982. The top two crews from the 1st boat events qualify for the Usrowing National Youth Championship formally (Usrowing Youth Invitational Championship) held in Cincinatti, OH in June.
Sport-Graphics Photos (many years available)
NEIRA: Sportsmanship Guidelines
2011- For the Second year in a row Simsbury sent all 6 varsity and jv crews to the regatta. 5 out of 17 possible teams sent all 6 crews (Simsbury, Kent, Exeter, Andover, and Tabor) The first boys was Simsbury's only boat to advance finishing 4th in the petite finals (10th overall). The G1, 2V, and 3V crews all rowed well in the heats and made the advancing crews earn a spot in the finals. The G1 eight despite having the 6th fastest time of the heats, finished 5th in their heat. Wind during the Varsity 8 boys and girls heats changed making comparing heats and times impossible.

Races no longer attended
This is a new race added to the schedule in spring of 2009. The whole team will be racing at all boat levels against Farmington and Glastonbury. The race will be held on the Farmington River at the Farmington / Miss Porters boathouse. The Janeczko family of Farmington donated a team point cup that will be determined through race results. Each race in which all 3 teams are represented counts towards the cup.
